Clearing the Air

I just wanted to quickly address a fallacy that I've seen pop up a few places regarding the HOP.  We are not here just to cater to competitive gamers.  Lauby and I love some stiff competition and a good competitive spirit, but we're also avid hobbyists- painting, reading, living, breathing, and eating (?) gaming.  I think that this mirrors the very real, silent majority of players a lot more closely than most will admit to.  We have nothing against fluff bunnies or competitive gamers and don't feel that those two things have to be mutually exclusive.  We are simply here to attempt the impossible and bring together a large community of players that crosses the imaginary lines drawn up by WAAC gamers, rivet counters, rules lawyers, softer gaming types, and anybody who generally detracts from the community.

The HOP isn't here to mock your play style.  Play the game however the fuck you want- don't late the haters poop in your party hat.  Again, we are simply here to try and bring as diverse a group of people as possible together under a single banner in a shot at making the hobby community better.  The articles that we're going to be bringing to you should run the entire breadth of the hobby, from painting, to narrative scenarios, to hard core list building, and everything in between.  One of our first articles is going to be coming from Kirby and the advanced copy that I read does a masterful job of expressing this idea- the idea of building a unified community.

In short, I just wanted to express that everyone is welcome here.  We are not attempting to cater to a particular gamer.  We just want you to have access to the best info out there regardless of what you're looking to get out of your games.

Coming Down the Pipe from Ye Olde HOP

It has been a whirlwind of activity this week for Lauby and I.  With so many people already in the blog network, we've been furiously working to keep up with an influx of membership submissions and even article submissions (all unsolicited too I might add).

With this in mind, we at the HOP  have decided to speed up our time line of becoming a full fledged blog and full service blog network.  Starting this coming Monday, we hope to have a number of exciting enhancements made to the site and begin our full hobby article operations.  The short list of things coming for the week ahead include:
  • Database of all member sites, as we have nearly filled the display capacity of the two blog rolls.  The blog rolls will still be up there, but with realistically only being able to show 50 blogs at once, we wanted to make sure that everyone has visibility.
  • Daily (or more) tactics, hobby, list building, and whatever articles from several authors.  Lots of secret plans at work here, you'll just have to tune in to see the end result
  • An army of the week feature, highlighting the behind the scenes process of creating a stunning army and the tactics employed on the field of battle
  • Hobby event pimping.  If you have a tourney, painting contest, paincake eating competition, or other hobby event e-mail us the details at houseofpaincakes.info@gmail.com and we'll be sure to give you a shout out
  • Product reviews for our favorite hobby items.  Un- biased, blunt, and advertisement free, as you would expect
  • Weekly top (insert whole number integer here) lists.  We're reading all of your blogs looking for the best articles every week.  The most enlightening ones will be featured in a weekly post
That's it for now from us.  Thanks again for all of the support and we look forward to bringing things fully up to speed next week.  If there's anything we can do to help you out- blogging advice, tactics help, finding a date for that wedding you've got coming up, or whatever- drop us a line and we'll see if we can help.  Remember, if there's a feature you want to see or an event you want to promote, all you have to do is ask.

Several Short Essays on Being God's Gift to the Internet

In our joining instructions, we asked that prospective members write "an essay of 500 words or less explaining why you are God's gift to the Internet, which we will ignore."  We lied a bit.  We didn't plan on ignoring any of your essays.  In fact, everyone who has joined us so far has now had their essay retroactively entered into our double secret essay contest.

It turned out that many of you out there have some pretty great senses of humor. Thank Unholy Krondor!  Between all the scrambling around like crazy people we were doing, we had some genuine laughs over the contents of the membership applications.  Don't worry, it was the good kind of laughter - like the kind you have right after someone hurts themselves on Youtube.

We thought it'd be pretty great to wade through the e-mountain of e-mails we've received to find the best 'essays' that had been sent to us and then share them with everyone.

The HOP Logo for Wordpress Users- Updated- Now Without HTML Errors

Looking in our busy inboxes this morning we were hit upside the head by a hammer of pure awesome.  Mighty Thor himself took the time to write up instructions for you Wordpress users to add the HOP logo and link to your sites.

1. Right click the the logo for House of Paincakes and choose 'Save Image As...' or 'Save Picture As...' depending on your browser
2. In WordPress go to Media->Add New and choose the image you saved and upload it
3. Once uploaded copy the text in the field 'File URL'
4. Go to Appearance->Widgets and drag a text widget over to whichever sidebar you want the logo to show up in
5. In that text widget paste this in:

<a href="
http://www.houseofpaincakes.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><img src="file_url_you_copied" border="0"></a>

You'll want to change the 'file_url_you_copied' to actually be the file URL that you copied from step #3.

6. Click save and you're done

See, this is exactly what we're on about with this blog network.  Sharing and collaboration.  Thor saw a need and jumped in with a solution for all of you.

If you're feeling appreciative, you can head on over to Thor's blog, Creative Twilight and check his stuff out.   He's got a pretty robust collection of articles covering almost every aspect of 40k and some pretty good gaming introspection.

Pardon Our Awesome Dust

Just a few quick little announcements on day two of our official existence:

1) To be quite honest, our first day has been pretty awesome amazing fucking fantastic and exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. It’s also been very busy. We've been adding blogs almost all day and getting a good bit of constructive criticism along with that.

Part of the process of making the House of Paincakes totally boss and cool is responding to problems/concerns and working with the community to improve. It’s an ongoing process - to state the obvious. Things like the major template changes are just one of the many things we’re willing to do to make this site great. As we get more input and more ideas from you guys, more things may change.

So please bear with us as we make tweaks and changes here and there ove the coming days.

2) For those of you who have colored backgrounds on your own sites and for those of you who are not using blogger, the logo may be an issue. Unfortunately, I can’t make a widget for the wordpress guys, so you’ll have to put the logo up manually. For those of you who would like an opaque background on the logo or even a different sized logo, we’re making a few options available to you under the 'logo' link in the tabs at the top of the page. If anybody needs something else done with the logo, just shoot us an email at houseofpaincakes.info@gmail.com

3)  For anybody who wants to join in the fun, the comments section is not the proper place to apply.  Please, pleas send an e-mail request to make sure we see it.  More information can be found here.

4) Lastly, and most importantly: We’d like to personally thank everyone who has signed up and supported us so far. Hell, we’d even like to thank the people who haven’t joined yet but are thinking about it. This network and this blog are all about you guys; thank you from the bottom of our black hearts for everything you guys have done to help us give this project such a good start.

Where Are the Ads?

Notice something? Maybe there's something missing here, perhaps? Well you're on to something, you handsome, canny devil. We do not have any ad support for this blog. This gives us more room to make the site look like a geocities page*. In all seriousness though, we are seriously for serious committed to keeping this site advertisement free, for serious even.

There are a lot of reasons for this. First and foremost, we are here to advertise for you, the gaming enthusiast. Whether you're here to promote your blog or find something good to read, we don't want to clutter up the page with a bunch of nonsense about dating services, the warstore (even if Neal is pretty great), or the Oprah book of the month. The network exists to promote your blog and that's what we're going to do.

Beyond that simple logic, we also aim to be as neutral as possible. In the event that we bring you a piece of news, a product review, or any other article, we want you to know that it is as unbiased as we can make it. We feel very strongly that by not accepting advertising revenue, we will be able to keep our integrity firmly intact.

The future is bright for us. As we've alluded previously, there are a lot of plans in the works. Some of these will cost money. We'll be buying our own domain in the near future (probably out of pocket, not that it's too expensive) and we're going to try and bring you some prize support down the road. Let's just leave that open ended for you guys to speculate about for now. In short, running this blog certainly won't be free for the owners for very long. It may become necessary to drum up some cash or product support down the road to keep things going or just to do what we want to do to promote the gaming hobby. That's a bridge that we will cross when we reach it. I can't tell you exactly where we're going to draw support from, but we can promise you 2 things-
  1. Ad banners will never grace our pages
  2. We will be open, honest, and transparent about any support that we do receive

We want all of you to remember this. If you see a change in the future that you thinks violates this, let us know so that we can consider it. Here's to this never being an issue.

 ======================================================================

*We've already been hated on a little bit for page design. We'll consider making some changes later on, but for now you should be glad that we didn't choose a dark background, bright text format. That shit seriously hurts my eyes.

Welcome to the House of Pain.....Cakes

Today is the day ladies and gentlemen.  The House of Paincakes is officially live and open for business.  After nearly a year of deliberation on the subject, it is with great pride that Lauby and I bring you this blog network.  We're looking forward to years of hard work and promoting the table top wargame hobby to come.

Right now a lot of you may be wondering exactly what the hell this is, but are too lazy to click on the "Vision" link.  To succinctly answer the questions in your mind, the HOP is a blog network.  Not only that, but it's probably the best blog network for gamers ever.  In order to make sure that everybody with a blog and something to say gets a chance to promote themselves, we've created HOP to be something of an everyman's network.  Seriously, go check out our "Code of Conduct."  We think you'll find it a little less constricting than any other network and a lot more reasonable to boot.  Here's where things get exciting.  Not only is this network more accommodating, but we're working around the clock across every time zone to bring you articles from the top minds in gaming and news on the best hobby events.  We look forward to the HOP becoming your one stop shop for reliable gaming info.

That's it for today.  Thanks for stopping in.  If you write for a blog, make sure you take down our Contact Information, follow the instructions on that link, and hit us up to be added to the blog roll and grab the widget at the bottom of the page (it only works for blogger, unfortunately.  To add the logo for any other application hit us up and we'll make arrangements to get it to you).  If you're just here to read about the games that we all love to play make sure you follow us, bookmark us, or favorite us.  On behalf of the entire HOP crew, welcome and be sure to stay tuned in- we are going to grow the fuck out of this network as fast as we damn well can.
