User Content Friday - It’s Like Tactics: Interwebz R Wrong about Mechanized

Fluger posted this up on Blood of Kittens about 2 weeks ago.  I thought it was so good that it deserved a second go around.  Kinda like the Deathstar in a way...  I have two naive hopes for this:  1) a different cross-section of people will see this and 2) it will spark intelligent discussion.  In any case, food for thought and be sure to check out the comments section of the original posting.  There's some good stuff in there as well.

Get ready to post lots of angry comments! I’m about to challenge a notion so central to 5th edition that people take it like its obvious. The notion? Mechanized is almost infinitely better than basic infantry. Now, I’m not talking about things that even the most “competitive” of list builders gives a pass to: bikes, jump pack units with FnP, long fangs, etc…

I’m talking about honest to goodness infantry that walks everywhere and is usually equipped with basic weaponry. I’ll use this article by Kirby as an example of the mindset I’m arguing against: http://kirbysblog-ic.blogspot.com/2010/01/why-mech-foot.html

Essentially, his argument boils down to these few points:

1. Mech is more survivable
2. Mech is faster

I think this quote encapsulates this mindset the best: “Foot is just too static and has to deal so much more damage to a Mech army in a mobile and defensive enviornment that they just can’t cope.”

Where in the World is Lantz? - Lantz In The Pantz

Dateline: House of Paincakes, the Internet - October 28th, 2010

Local residenst mourned the loss of good taste today as Lantz McDonald brutalized everyone's sense of decency in a calculated act of wanton depravity:

You may want to ask your children to leave the room.
Eye Witness accounts universally agree that Mr. McDonald posed 'sexily' for two or three hours and claimed that [He would] "be on the cover of Sports Illustrated for the next swimsuit edition".  Those wounded in the blast were taken to the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery

Fire Department and Police authorities were unable to apprehend the suspect and advise everyone to lock there doors until this crisis is over. Health officials recommend that in the event of accidental contact with Lantz, victims flush there eyes with cool water and then immediately contact a poison control center.

The Weekly Top X: Brent Style

I only have a few seconds before Brent gets here... so I gotta make it quick.  We put Brent in charge of the Top X picks this week.  So please be nice to him no matter how crappy you may think it is.  He's fragile he is.  And another thing... OH SHIT!  He's here!  Quick!  Act like we weren't just talking all conspiritorially.  Be cool, man.  Be cool.

John:  Hi, Brent!
Brent: Ah, a Brent Top X! The control is going to my head. What shall we do for this week’s theme? Anything I want!

The second I get to know Brent well enough to send X-mas gifts, he is totally getting one of these.

Army Spotlight: Sandwyrm's Tallarn Pt. 1 of 2

It is with great pride that we of the HoP kicks off a new series for the site: The Army Spotlight. Here we will be featuring some of the best of those rare armies that are able to pull everything together in a force that is a beast on the table and is simply gorgeous to look at.  If you've got an army you want to brag about, send us a few pics and you might be the next spotlight.

For this first article, I grabbed my canteen and set off through the deserts of Tallarn in order to track down Sandwyrm from the Back 40k.  I've always been an admirer of his work and he is, to date, still one of the only people I've seen out there rocking the forces of Tallarn.  Today I'll be sharing what we discussed on the gaming side of things- list building, tactics, and so forth as well as what drew him to the Tallarn.  Next week we'll satiate all of your hobby cravings and get down to the nitty gritty of painting and converting.  Shit, we may even find out how the hell he actually got the original Sentinel models to look good.  If everything goes well, we might even get some first looks at the newly finished models for his current list as well as a brand spanking new display board.
