Dateline HoP: Things You Should be Aware of

We like it when people ask us to help promote their own efforts.  It's fun, it gives us a feeling of satisfaction and it's a key part of our whole deal here.  So here are three such projects people want you to be aware of.

(Though apologies upfront to the people who asked us to do this.  You see, with last week's deadly struggle against our negaverse bizarro selves we weren't able to post these bits of news in a place that would make sense or at the very least get enough attention. It also doesn't help that our bizarro doppelgangers aren't all that helpful - it's like they're opposites or something...)

No matter the universe: Spock is awesome
1) Bad Journalism:  the Antipope has run into a nasty piece of yellow journalism in his country of origin and would very much like to draw people's attention to the fact that it's being claimed that the Greek Warhammer 40k scene is a hotbed of fascism.  It's worth your time to head over there and check out the details.   There's even a way for you to help out.

2) Charity Army Project:  Speaking of helping out.  Some buddies from the Relicnews Forums have gotten together and built a pretty fantastic Blood Ravens army for a raffle to raise some money for charity.  Bidding is now live and all the proceeds go Child's Play. Full details of the drawing can be found here and be sure to check out the rest of the blog for more information on just about any question you may have about the endeavor.

3) The Lord Inquisitor - A few of our readers felt that we needed to help make people aware of the fact that there a new 40k CGI movie in the works.  Ah ha, but there are some key differences.
  1. It's fan made
  2. It doesn't look like shit
  3. Explosions
For more info and a peek at the trailer, go here.

New Member Monday - Regularly Scheduled Programming

It took some doing, but last Saturday we finally managed to force our evil (or more evil) doppelgangers back through the fiery portal from which the came.  There was trickery and even a spot of the ultra-violence but after it was all said and done, nobody died and Dethtron was the only one who had to have sex with their own bizarro self.  We will be fielding no questions on any part of the ordeal.

I went with this image because google images in
safe mode wasn't all that safe today.  I was afraid to go on.
So thanks to everyone for reading and we now return you to our regularly scheduled...

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] Division of Labor

The division of labor at our store is pretty lopsided. TheDude does all the frontline work-he's the manager, the sales man, the customer service representative, the purchasing agent, the shipping/receiving clerk, the sales analyst and the janitor all wrapped into one bundle.

I work a day job.

The Weekly Top X: In the Grim Future of Next Friday, There is Only Ian Watson

Not Brent: Who’s this dude with the monocle? Where’s Lauby?

Von: Come with me now, on a journey through time and space! Through the uttermost bleakness of the night eternal that lies betwixt the joyless stars we’re bound, this thin shell of silicon and plastic around us creaking and cracking, bashed by cosmic waves. The light of the Astronomican falls behind us. We pass outside the Imperium we know, into formless void that knows not the tread of Man. Within this ancient gloom lies hallowed and unbidden knowledge predating the Emperor, the Age of Strife, the lights of reason and of faith. Within these quaint and curious volumes of forgotten lore, we find...

Not Brent: Lauby! LAUBY!

Von: … Imperitas Lux! A voice out of the aether? Am I beset? Is this possession? Should I simply set my weapon to my head, and trust the blessed psybolts to scour this foulness from my mind... or can I learn from these atrocity that bedevils me? Yes. Yes... I think I shall let the daemon incarnate itself for now. Perhaps it will spout truths, reveal knowledge, or grant delights? What say you, warp-spawn? No lies!

Not Brent: Yes, yes you should.

Not Brent: Set your weapon right there - and don’t forget the safety.

Not Brent: Creep. Scour me, will you?

Not Brent: Where’s Lauby and why am I being punished?

Bizarro Week is Still On

This was supposed to be a reminder, callously calling out the barely literate members of the audience  who have yet to notice that we're in the middle of a theme week at the HoP, but then I remembered that bizarro dethtron is nice, so instead here's a picture of a puppy in a snail shell:

But on a serious note, Bizarro Week, where alternate, opposite doppelgaenger versions of the HoP writing staff take over is still going on through Saturday.  And it's going swimmingly if I must say so.

Gaming Without a Budget - Lauby's Malifaux Table

Hello and welcome to another installment on how to lord your disposable income over poor neck-beards.  Today we're going to be spending way more money than we need to with just a touch of a  "This Old House" vibe.

Let's get to it.

Special Lady Friend and I recently started up Malifaux and we're having a grand old time at it.  But after a few test games it became apparent that we were in dire need of a gaming surface. Now, most people's first thoughts on this topic would be on how this could be done cheaply.  Screw that noise! Lets spend some goddamn money and do this up proper!"

With all that in mind, I set out to plan and build a 3'x3' gaming surface that I could potentially shelter under in the event of an earthquake.

Shelter more like the girl in front, not those idiots in back.
Step zero (as I am now, as snootily as possible, calling it) was research.  I've not made a lot of gaming surfaces as I've never needed them in my own home. Or at least not ones with grass on them. So there were some questions I needed answered so that spending a lot of money didn't become wasting a lot of money (remember, spending money with nothing to show for it = bad). Thankfully, I had some articles on the Good Robot Us's site to work from.

A Mr. D. Tron has made a much more frugal effort to make a gaming table and I will be using this as a guide for technique if not cost. And, seriously, go read those two posts because I am going to be making a ton of references to them.

SinSynn gets Bizarro: The Hamster's REVENGE!

Guess what?
SinSynn couldn't make it here today.
That's right, suckas....
'Pink isn't well, he's back at the hotel.'

Instead, you'll be dealing with me.
....the hamster in his head.
And yes, I totally just hit you with a Pink Floyd reference.

Rants from an angry woman

ahem... is this thing on?

Good. 'Cause I'm only saying this once.

The World of Fluff with GMort the Cheerful.....

Somewhere in the dungeons below a generic evil fortress.....

" The prisoner is secure?"
" Yes my Lord, though I don't see why you didn't just drop him in some lava or feed him to the Clawbeasts like normal....."
" We may need him later.....and what could be worse torture for him than seeing the fluff filled article were going to write on his behalf using the evil clone?"
" I'm pretty sure being incinerated or eaten alive would be worse.....and besides which if the clone's writing a fluffy article doesn't that make him a good clone and the original evil?"
" Silence!!!!! If you knew anything about being an arch enemy then you wouldn't be in the generic henchman outfit.....though you may have a point about the 'evil' bit..... "
" Fair enough dread overlord......but how did you break into his blogger account "
" His password was 'Fuck'....."
" Oh... "
" and he's DEFINITELY secure? "
" Yes."
" you used one of the cells without a rusty lock, no key hidden behind a false brick, easily activated escape route or gullible guard? "
" Of course "
" That's all right then "
" hang-on.....did you just say without......"

Hello everyone, and an extra special hello to Gav Thorpe for his wonderful work on the Chaos Space Marine Codex and a big thank-you to Matt Ward for his incredibly well thought out background material.....

Kaldor Draigo....what a great guy.

Musings of a Game Store Patron [Customer's Bill of Rights]

When we decided that we were doing this whole bizarro week thing, I knew right away that I wanted to write Loquacious' normal column from the customer perspective.  Luckily, when drawing straws to see who got what, the sheer force of my personality saw to it that random chance and fate were on my side and I would indeed get the opportunity to do this.  Well, either that or I bullied my way into it since I sort of co-run this blog thing here.  We'll leave it up to history to decide that one.

dethtron, artists interpretation

Bizarro Week at the HoP

You kids ready to get freaky?  Good, because it's Bizarro Week here at the HoP.

But what the shit is Bizarro Week?  It's simple really.  All you need is an advanced degree in theoretical physics and an intimate understanding of how string theory allows for the possibility of parallel universes to understand.

The Von Show #3 - Expectations Made Explicit

It's occured to me that I failed to answer James S' question in the first week as thoroughly as it deserved, and so I'm devoting this instalment of the Von Show into doing a better job of it.  As per usual, the script-not-transcript lies beyond the cut.

A particularly flattering choice of clip there... I don't think.

Charity Game Auction-

Hello ladies and gentlemen.  There will be no Top X today since I want the following to be the focus for the day.  Our very own Loquacious is doing what she does best - being a good human being - and wanted to get as many eyes on this as possible.  This is not an advertisement for Armored Gopher or anything like that, they just happen to be the face of the good deed.  So please, with the spirit of the holidays in mind, please check this out.  Even if all you can do is pass it along to a friend, that't a bigger gift than you know.

Huge Charity Game Auction

Cordelia “Cee” Geiken is a wife and mom. Her small size may make her look  like a pushover, but Cee is a fierce and determined woman. Her son runs  track, is in band, and as a senior, is nearing graduation. Her daughter is soon to enter high school, and has endless possibilities ahead of her. Cee’s husband Deane is an enthusiastic, lively and passionate man, devoted  to his faith and family. Deane is also an active member of the local gaming community. The Geiken family  has been dedicated to serving others through leading youth groups, scouting, fundraising for public radio and many more service activities.

This generous and loving family has been hit hard by an accident in August. Cee was riding her motorcycle and had a serious incident that crushed her pelvis and created a tear in her aeorta. The first indications after the  accident were very dire- there was a serious concern that she would not  make it through the surgery intended to save her life.

As stated before, Cee is a fierce woman. She made it through the surgeries and is on the mend- but she has a long way to go. She is out of the hospital and is in a skilled rehabilitation center, working to get well
enough to go home for Christmas.

She wants to go home for Christmas.  What a simple and tender wish.

** **

The community of people around her want to help her open GIFTS and not  bills this Christmas.

The ever-rising cost of her recovery and rehabilitation is a serious and pressing worry. The hospital stay, the surgeons, the anesthesiologists, the medications, the medical equipment (such as a specialized bed, wheelchair, and wound care), the ambulance rides to and from doctor appointments, the rehab facility, the physical and occupational therapists, and many more medical expenses have become daunting. In addition , the loss of wages,  extra tanks of gas for her husband to go to and from the hospital to home, extra meals out, the parking passes,  and numerous other incidental costs have hit them financially as well.

In an effort to support the Geiken Family, Armored Gopher Games is hosting a fundraising event, with all proceeds going to the Geikens to alleviate their financial distress.

Saturday December 10, 12pm-6pm

Activities include raffles throughout the event and a live auction (over $1000 worth of games) at 2pm.

Gaming on a Budget: Blackest Friday

Happy Turkey genocide day for our American readers.  Later today you'll most likely be tucking in to a lovely spread of food just before going into a carbohydrate related coma (yeah many would allege that you're sleepy due to the tryptophan in Turkey, but that's a bunch of bullshit).  This article is going to have a bit of an interactive component to it, so make sure you help out your fellow gamers in the comments section when you're prompted to at the end.

Once you awake from your slumber and maybe watch some sports on the old boob tube if you're like me you'll be ready for some shopping.

A Very SinSynn Thanksgiving

Hey, folks SinSynn here.

Welp, it's that time of year again.

The time of year when Terrans gather in familial groups, and gorge themselves on large quantities of flesh torn from a large, virtually flightless bird that was bred and raised for the sole purpose of being slaughtered and having their corpse roasted on this very occasion.

Poor sods...they ARE quite tasty, though.
The birds, not the Terrans...they're tough, and a little stringy, unless prepared correctly.

I'm pretty sure this particular peculiar ritual is limited to the country in which I make my lair, where it is deemed 'Thanksgiving.'
How quaint.

*Here, cheerful Terrans prepare to devour their victim*

Frontline Gamer Supporting the S.O.P.H.I.E. Foundation

If you despise hatred, bigotry, and single mindedness as much as we hear at the HoP do, please go to Frontline Gamer's blog today to learn how you can help support the S.O.P.H.I.E. Foundation.

Having been the victim of a quasi-hate crime myself for looking different, this group and the story behind it strikes pretty close to home for me.  Please visit Frontline's site and see how you can help.

The internet isn't exactly short on personalities who'll tell you what the next most awesome tournament list ever is (or is going to be) and a few of those might occasionally be correct about it.

Finding a viable 'Razorback Spam' list or a decently worked out Grey Knights list (though it may not have many Grey Knights in it) is fairly easy. If your really lucky there might even be a brief explanation about how to use the list included in the post together with some tactical advice which is sometimes helpful. Though some aren't.....

New Member Monday - Go Watch "the Von Show"

It went up pretty late in the day (Americanly speaking) and even later if your across the pond (technically a day late).  If Von hadn't flat out told us why he picked Saturdays, I could easily guess.  The transcript doesn't do the video justice.  So go watch it after reading this post.  Seriously.  It's a cracking good time.

You'll also get a good liberal arts style education on how to use the word 'bollocks'.

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] Culpability

Last week I talked about what a game store does. I talked about the positives a FLGS offers the hobby crowd and tried to give a sense of "what's good" about a place that "just wants money" (quote from a customer this week- sort of a joke, but fitting).

Now, a little about what the customer often wants in exchange for all the things we offer them.

TheDude and I have been very progressive about allowing our community a "voice" in what happens at the store, and we encourage a culture of community involvement. It's taken pretty seriously and many of our Mafia feel a sense of ownership and stake in the store and its success.

The Weekly Top X - Sick, man!

Hi ho there everybody!  Welcome back to the only recurring series where the 'x' in it's title is a variable. As opposed to it being a roman numeral or an indication of soft core porn satus.

I'm sorry to say that after last week's super dose of Top X goodness, that this week is a bit anemic.  So it's not 10 selections or a novelization of Femalien.  Funny story about that actually (the anemic part, not the soft core porn)... I came down with an upper respiratory thing and spent most of my time over the week resting and drinking plenty of fluids rather than reading blogs and wrangling Brent to put his skull in the dick-joke-o-matic.

Don't bother with the sequel.  Or in general.
Now, I know what you're thinking and my illness is NOT due to being face huggered in my sleep.  There was no huggery.  And I understand your worry.  I spent most of Monday, myself, worrying if a tiny dick shaped alien would burst out of my chest.  "Luckily", it turns out that sinus infections CAN be contagious.  But I'm still not ruling out SinSynn's involvement.  There'll probably be an inquest or something.

The Von Show: What Makes A Good RPG?

I won?

That was... unexpected.  Thank you so much if you voted for me, hope I can live up to your expectations, and if you didn't... well, I hope you can find something to enjoy about the series, and I really hope that Lantz and HotPanda end up sharing their thoughts on 40K6 and WFB8 down the line, 'cause their entries were pretty damn interesting if you ask me.

As before, there's a script after the cut, which should be more or less accurate but I reserve the right for it not to be.  Especially not after I've had to film this something like six times just to work out a combination of mikes, cameras, computers and editing software that will actually produce something.  What's gone wrong since last week?  I don't know.  This is why GAME OVER doesn't even have pictures half the time... grumble grumble sulk...

Gaming On a Budget: IG Hull Weapon Magnets

I've made a promise to myself that I must keep regarding this article.  I will not make mention of a certain band oft linked to magnets in the popular culture.  Let's all hope I can make it because even I, ever late to a new meme, am sick as hell of that one.

Having turned in my black V-Neck and coca cola cup at the end of the HoP Idol competition, I'm free to start blogging again.  After Lauby's rousing treatise on using plastic bags for hand protection last week, I'll be returning to this series on the regular.  I hope you've all missed it a little, because I've missed writing it.

Rather than talk at length about the virtues of saving money by using magnets for your miniatures, I'm going to dive pretty much straight into a very common, useful project for all of you guys.  Sufficed to say that the executive summary of "dethtron's treatise on the cost savings and ROI of magnets in the gaming hobby" reads something like 'buy magnets to put guns on your shit so that you can use different guns on your shit without having to buy totally new shit since magnets are pretty cheap and shit.'  I buy my magnets from here

SinSynn: Deep in the bowels of GW Headquarters...No, wait...

*sound of chains clinking, links scraping against a stone surface. Several muffled voices are moaning in obvious discomfort. A single set of footsteps is heard, heels clicking a deliberately timed pace, back and forth. After every second step, a sliding sound is heard, as if there's something...heavy being dragged. A very faint, rhythmic sucking noise accompanies the footsteps and dragging. It's almost the sound of a baby with a pacifier, just...twisted. A voice is heard. The voice is angry, and petulant. It's high-pitched, but carries an indescribable menace*

"Well....since it seems we've forgotten the lessons from our LAST little 'meeting,' I thought it was best if I recorded this one. Not just so you won't forget what transpires here today...but because I think it's funny...What, nothing to say? No witty rejoinders?"

*The long pause that follows is filled with the obvious protestations of several male prisoners, all of whom are unable to properly retort due to having been gagged at some previous juncture*

"Oh,'ve all been gagged, and chained here for my amusement. See? It's funny already."

*More muted protests, this time accompanied by the sound of arms thrashing about in manacles*

The Inevitable Necron Article...

You all knew it would happen eventually, so don't act surprised.....

So after many years of waiting the Necron players have finally got themselves a new Codex and I suppose the big question is "was it worth the wait?"

Lets look first at the obvious changes to the background and how that effects Necrons as a whole.

Firstly, They've decided to give Necrons a bit of personality as for many people the Necrons were .....well...a bit fucking dull.....They may have had a point......However.....

Giving each Tomb World a distinct set of motivations has allowed the personalisation of each army so a Necrons players choice of customisation is no longer a matter of picking which metallic colour scheme to choose or scouring the internet for plastic rods of a slightly different shade of green. Many believe this new concept idea is going to allow a myriad of different armies to be seen on the tabletop which is great I suppose...except...

They're no longer really the Necron army that players started using now are they?

Von is the New HoP Idol

Congratulations to Game Over's Von for becoming the first ever HoP Idol, beating out the competition by a mere hair's breadth this week.  Starting soon, Von will now be you all his own weekly series here at the HoP.

I want to thank everyone who wrote for the contest, read the entries and voted.  You all helped make this the best HoP idol yet!

Don't worry about the chaps that didn't win, though.  I'm not saying anything specific yet, but we've got some super special consolation prizes coming up for them all very soon.

New Member Monday - Important Information Herein

Hello again, everyone!  It's an exciting week here at the ol' HoP.  The results of the HoP Idol finale will be announced and our new author will be formally introduced?  Will it be Von and his soothing Theatre voice?  HotPanda and his madcap zaniness?  Or Lantz with his rumors and various last name puns?

Well, you'll just have to wait and see.

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] What Do You Do?

I saw a comment on a blog earlier this week. It was asking why one should frequent a FLGS, when they had a hobby basement and there was the internet. It went something like:

"A game store's great, but what does it do?"

My humble reply:

I sell games. Board games, roleplaying, miniatures, card and dice games. I sell teeny tiny space menz. I sell paper crack. I sell “poncing about playing make believe”. I sell big boxes of cardboard and plastic with funny rules on how to use them.

I sell fun.

The Weekly Top X: Eleven

It's a looong Top X today, so this is gonna be a short intro.  Just a couple of quick notes before we get started:
  • I just don't know what to think of the Fiat 500 now that it's being sold in the states.
  • Has anyone really considered the benefits of owning a fine set of encyclopedias recently?
If this was in the set, I would buy the shit out of some encyclopedias
1) Bear's 40K blog - Nemesis Dreadknight, The slap in the face box
When the Nemisis Dreahdknight first came out, I was all like “WOW! That’s about as much robotic win as you can get”. Then someone pointed out the child carrier thing. But you know what? It’s still cool and this Hungarian dude and I know what’s up.

2) All Things Fett - Tanksgiving
This is a pretty neat idea that I wish I had thought of first so I could have started my own countdown that I would probably never finish. I guess in a way, we’re all lucky that it isn’t my series. I think Counterfett will finish this. Also, if you don’t like this series, you’re a bad person and should be ashamed of yourself.

Gaming on a Budget - A Bag is a Non-rigid Container... for Your Hands

It's been a while since Gaming on a Budget has been seen round these parts.  But the mad fever dream is still alive.  In a couple of places, as it so happens.

First up, a shout out for Bringer of Victory.  Nikephoros has been channeling his inner "Larry the Cable Guy" and gittin r' done on a series about getting into Warhammer Fantasy on the cheap.  Here are the links, but please (pleaseplease) come back here and read the rest of this post.
Now back to the HoP.  Today's little money saving gem may not be as awesome as only needing to spend 300 bucks on a fantasy army, but it is pretty nifty.

Right, so if you're like me, you have a big boy job where you really can't go into work with a bunch of paint on your hands and still expect to be treated like an adult.

At some point you may be required to shake hands with someone.

SinSynn is Totally a Noob

Hey folks, SinSynn here.

So lately I've been thinking about Tournaments, cuz I will definitely be attending one in the next few months.
I'm registered to play my Flames of War Germans in the upcoming Conflict GT event.
There's a 40k thingy goin' on there, too....but I'm all into FoW lately, so....yeah.

I suppose that means I've got a handful of months to actually learn to PLAY this game, huh?

Right now, it feels like I'm at the low point of the learning curve...facing a steep climb.

*Below 'novice' is 'complete and utter noob,' not represented here*

The Ultimate Rival and myself have kicked into what I'd call 'Rocky Training Mode,' if like, y'know...there was anything 'Rocky-like' about prepping for a Tournament.

Cuz I'm totally 'Eye of the Tiger' as I...bench-press that rulebook.

User Content Wednesday - Lorin Alpha

Hey all!  Since HoP Idol has been running, the User Content Wednesday feature has been suspiciously missing.  Well, the contest is in it's final leg and there's nothing quite like general dumb-assery to get things rolling again.

Waaaaay back in June, a man who goes by Lorenzen realized (like many) that the House of Paincakes was indeed the coolest shit ever.  He shot us a request to join and we were all like "YAY!".  But we just plain forgot to add him to the rolls... for five goddamn and/or fucking months.  The guy even won the essay contest for that week!  What he hell is wrong with us?!  You would have though that the least we could do was add him to a blog list.  Apparently, we could do quite a bit less than that.

Which brings us to today.  We fucked up and we have 5 months to make up for.  So here's just a taste of what we hid from you.  Enjoy these excerpts and make sure to click on the links for extra juice:

Writers Block.

I'm sitting here typing this without a clue about what I'm actually going to write about.

If this was my own blog I could do a post on an e-mail request for help (I get a few but normally just reply to them personally, rather than do a post on them), whichever army project I'm currently play-testing or some interesting new conversion or painting project I'm in the middle of......

This isn't my blog though.

I'm going to have to think of something interesting to talk about that fits into the 'editorial' mould that's expected of me and I'm reasonably sure inspiration is messing around somewhere else because it sure isn't anywhere near me right now, lol.

Of course I could just pick a dull subject and liven it up with some swear words,

New Member Monday - A Simple Question

If your minis were made out of spare ribs and you were starving would you eat 'em?

Alternatively, you may also discuss that the P3 color 'Coal Black' is neither coal nor black.

Aaaaaand that's all the SNL greatest hits from the 90's I have time to steal.  But do feel free to engage in discussion on these weighty matters.
