New Member Monday - Tube Sock Advisory

Hey folks, welcome to an increasingly less unreliable week at the House of Paincakes!

We've got an interesting week ahead of us - new members, new news and even a new...  well, you'll just have to wait for that one.  I'm going to go ahead and advise that you don't wear socks on Friday if you plan on reading the blog.  Any socks or other such cloth foot coverings are likely to be knocked clean off in an energetic fashion.  At the very least, don't wear shoes lest they get damaged during any sudden violent removal of socks that should happen.  Though still wear the socks, the experience is unique.

Those of you with weak stomachs and less than perfect control over your bowels/bladders should probably have a bucket on hand.

Friday will be pretty exciting is what I'm saying.

The Politically Incorrect Gamer: Chuckle and Shrug

Hey, folks. SinSynn here.

So like most of my plans, my previously scheduled 'argument with Loqacious' post is getting put on the back burner. Neither of us seem to be coherent at the same time, which makes debating with me either annoying and frustrating or completely impossible, depending on who's coherent and who isn't.
Not that coherence is something I strive for, mind you.

*I always choose Chaos. Iz moar fun*

Anyway, I wanted to share some jokes with you.
Have you heard this one?

Q: What's the difference between a Frenchman and a trampoline?
A: You take your shoes off before jumping on a trampoline.

Hardy-har, amiright?

Yeah, I'm sorta technically French. Or of French descent, or whatever you wanna call it.

[Games Anatomy] I'm Not Playing A Game With Arse In The Title

Ars Magica, or 'the Art of Magic', is an early effort by White Wolf Games, (former-as-of-this-year developers of the World of Darkness and Exalted). It's set in Mythic Europe, an idealised and romanticised version of the thirteenth century where magic works, fairies exist whether you believe in them or not, and there be dragons here. And there. And in quite a few other places. It's an embryonic version of the Storyteller System, with many similarities to Mage in particular (unsurprising, given that they're games about wizards by the same developer), but with some elegant and interesting structural differences in how the game is actually played. And, true to form, I can't entirely work out how to feel about it.

Rather than going for the from-the-ground-up dissection of system and setting like I usually do, I want to spend some time discussing what makes Ars Magica different from its antecedents, and why the game both attracts and repels me in equal measure. Hopefully that'll cover more or less the same ground.

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] GGP: More Networking

Networking- we talked about it last week. I promised a little more this time around.

Honestly, it's an art. Most ambitious people mess it up, and the people that need it most are dearly lacking in ability or willingness.

Art is subjective to most people, and creating it is a lot of work. It's something that can (and honestly, should) be practiced. Working at networking- practicing-  is difficult.

Lantz's Antzwers: The Floating And Walking Dead

Did I mention I'd be inconsistently posting? I did? Okay, good. So here we are, the second post of my segment and I came up with a clever name for it to boot! What a crazy few weeks it's been. Booze. Chaos Space Marines codex. Women. My Necron army is finished. Booze. Presidential debates. Booze. The list goes on and on! Hope everyone has had a great time since my last posting, but let's get to these questions. If you don't remember how this works, simply email me a rules question at sinaura40k(at)gmail(dot)com related to 40k and I'll systematically dissect that bastard until we come to a logical answer.

Time Versus Fun

Hey, folks. SinSynn here.

I promise that next week I'll return you to our irregularly scheduled program, which will be a 'Politically Incorrect Gamer' post featuring my good-time buddy Loquacious. In the meantime, however....

Eventually every blogger writes a post about time, or the lack of it.
This is mine.

An Explanation, of Sorts

Do you want to hear a secret? Course you do. I can tell. Come over here, be seated, and Uncle Von'll let you in on a little mystery.

I'm feeling a bit burned out on roleplaying at the moment.

[Musings of a Game Store Owner] GGP: Networking

Last week a reader asked about networking, and it's a big enough component to the publication industry that I'm doing what I can to address it.

Let's start with a definition.

Networking in a nutshell is developing and cultivating relationships in a way that grows your business.

Maybe that seems like "using" people (it sort of does to me). I don't make it about my business; I like to think of it as making friends.

For those of you that are shy or introverted, perhaps message boards, forums and blog communities are better for you since they don't involve face to face conversations. These avenues are also great for those that enjoy writing and meeting lots of people without using a lot of face to face conversations.

If you're more like me, and love talking to people- that's all it is. It's talking to people. I personally use a mix of in person, phone, email. Facebook, Twitter and blogs to talk to people; but it's talking to people.

It's important to know that networking is a careful balancing act- you can't just meet a person at a convention or event and then a week later drop your pitch. It should be a natural outflow of your relationship with the person, so they WANT to help you because you're friends or work in the same circles or whatever.

New Member Monday - International Relations

He folks, thanks for stopping by the HoP on this fine October Monday!  Here at the Illinois Central Servicing Office, the weather is nice and crisp, the trees are at the peak of displaying interesting colors and the pumpkin beer is flowing freely.

This stuff is like drinking an alcoholic pumpkin pie
In short, it's good damn time.  Especially after the horrendous summer that we suffered here.  Well, I didn't suffer it much.  I moved here at the end of it all.   I'm really just into fall for the beer.

Anyway, we've got a couple of genuinely amazing foreign blogs for you today.  One from Spain and one from Italy.  They are both fantastic.

The Politically Incorrect Gamer, Part 4- Special Guest Post

So SinSynn asked for people from the non-straight-white-guy category to speak up I figured I’d answer the call as I fit in a few of those.

[Musings of A Game Store Owner] GGP: 3PP

I had this great series all planned out in my head, with some incredible interviews lined up. Funny thing- life is what happens when you're busy making plans. I hoped to have the parts of the series follow a specific order, but that doesn't look like it will happen. I'm still waiting on replies from a few people I really think you'll enjoy. What I do have is great, and I'll get to it in just a moment.

I hope you'll forgive me for last week, I was slowly dying of the plague that's going around. it was a sneaky plague in that it acted like it was going away only to come back with a vengeance this weekend.

Not very menacing, but they got me none the less.

New Member Monday - Rules Lawyers and Dakka

Hey everyone!  I hope you're having as amazing a Monday as I am!  Actually, I hope your Monday is better than mine.  There's a touch of a hang over about me and I sure could have used a few extra hours of sleep.

But that's what happen when Sunday Funday stretches out a little longer than anyone had anticipated and you end up at a bar called "Bob's Butternut Hut".

The actual bar
In better (and less Lauby-centric) news we have a new member on the blog rolls and I found something cool for you all to look at.

First, the cool thing: FINISHED DAKKAJET! IN 720° VISION!

PX of PX40K has an excellent Ork Fighta he painted up and then, using some kind of techno-wizardry, photographed into one of those 360 degree views.  Only his is twice as good!

New Member Monday - Tickets Please

Hey folks!  Welcome back to Monday at the House of Paincakes!  We've got a new member today as well as a brief reminder that you still have 4 hours (as of this posting) to vote in the most current round of HoP Idol II voting.  Just over there on the right.  Just.. yeah, there ya go.  Click it!

The results show and some SUPER AMAZING SURPRISES should be up this the week as well.  Hopefully sooner rather than later, but Dethtron's got a lot on his plate since we had to re-assign  some of Von's HoP Animal Testing Center Duties.  Cuddling all those puppies is hard work.  Hopefully we can get Lantz through his orientation period in record time.  I think we're held up on sexual harassment training (as in how-to) and figuring out which arm he wants his HoP employee bar code on.

The Politically Incorrect Gamer, Part 3- It's Tradition

Hey folks. SinSynn here.

So has anybody else ever noticed that every 40k character ever invented lacks two things?
A spouse and children.

Now I understand that a cat like Gregor Eisenhorn doesn't really have time to set down roots, and there's probably not a Dark Eldar dude or dudette in Commorragh that can muster up the courage required to ask Lelith out for coffee. Or tea. Or whatever the heck it is that Dark Eldar drink.
But, whatevs, man. I mean, we all know that 40k characters are born via osmosis, or sumpthin,' right? Cuz in the grimdark future, there just ain't time for relationships, what with all the killin' and all.

*Burning heretics as a couple is part of the intimacy phase in the 40k universe*
